NAMI NJ Multicultural Conversations Webinar Series: Lived Experience of Racial Trauma in the AANHPI Community and What is Radical Healing?

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) New Jersey provides education, support, system advocacy, and public awareness to improve the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness. With my friends/colleagues on the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) HEAling from Racial Trauma (HEART) Team (Wendy Chu, MA and Andrea Ng, MA), we were invited to present a webinar on racial trauma and radical healing among AANHPI communities.

Immigrant Family Mental Health Advocacy (IFMHA) Clinician Tip Sheet on Advocating for Immigrant Families

The Immigrant Family Mental Health Advocacy (IFMHA) Program was created in 2018 to serve as a research-practice-policy hub focused on supporting the mental health of immigrant communities in Chicago. The IFMHA Program is part of the Institute for Juvenile Research (IJR) in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). One aspect of the IFMHA Program mission is to provide information and design resources for UI Health care providers and trainees, UIC/IJR researchers, and community partners. These resources center the critical role of advocacy principles and empowerment strategies in clinical science.

I created this guide to help clinicians integrate legal advocacy into clinical care for youth in immigrant-origin families. The guide was designed for clinicians to:

(1) bolster knowledge of immigration terms, policies, and legal resources;

(2) advocate for family unification through letters and/or affidavits of support for families seeking immigration relief; and

(3) support caregivers in managing stress in the context of immigration and status-related concerns.

NICOS Chinese Health Coalition Community Presentations

NICOS Chinese Health Coalition is a public-private-community partnership of more than 30 health and human service organizations and individuals with the mission to enhance the health and well-being of the San Francisco Chinese community. The AANHPI HEART Team presented several webinars on promoting radical healing in AANHPI communities in partnership with NICOS, including to the NICOS Chinese Health Coalition Chinatown Disaster Preparedness Committee, COVID-19 Network, and as part of a County of Alameda Department of Behavioral Health “Decolonizing How We Serve Asian American Clients” training.

Broader Urban Involvement & Leadership Development (BUILD) Mental Health 101 Workshop

BUILD is a violence prevention and youth development organization in Chicago’s West Side, with the mission to inspire hope and offer opportunities for youth facing systemic obstacles. With the incredible Dr. Gina Sissoko, I co-developed and co-led a two-part Mental Health 101 Workshop at BUILD to provide increased mental health awareness, along with practical and culturally-syntonic coping skills. We then conducted an evaluation of the workshop through a feedback survey and focus group.
